1. Data Collection
Information received through Jovena falls into a few categories. First, there is material you provide directly, such as your name or username, email address, profile details, specimen notes, comments, saved preferences, and any photographs or text you choose to upload while identifying plants or sharing ideas with the community.
In addition, the app may gather technical details from the device and service environment. These may include device model, operating system version, language settings, IP address, app version, crash reports, diagnostic information, approximate region, and interaction records such as feature usage, session timing, and general navigation behavior inside the app.
Some features may request access to permissions that are considered more sensitive. For example, camera or photo library access may be used when you add specimen images; location access may be used if you choose to tag observations by place; and contacts access would only be requested if a feature specifically depends on inviting or connecting with people you know. If a permission is not granted, related features may be limited, but the app will continue to function where possible.
Jovena may also use third-party software development kits and infrastructure tools for hosting, analytics, performance monitoring, account support, or content delivery. Those tools can receive limited technical or usage information needed to perform their role on our behalf.
2. Data Usage
The information described above is utilized to operate the app, maintain your account, support plant identification workflows, preserve specimen logs, display community posts, personalize the experience, and improve reliability over time. Diagnostic records may also help us investigate bugs, monitor service health, and understand which features are useful to the community.
Where appropriate, account details or activity records may be used to send service-related notices, respond to support requests, review misuse, enforce our rules, and protect the safety of the platform. If Jovena offers newsletters, product announcements, or promotional messages in the future, those communications will be handled in line with applicable law and any choices you make inside the app or through email settings.
Data may be shared with service providers that help us run the app, but only to the extent reasonably necessary for hosting, storage, analytics, moderation, customer support, fraud prevention, or related operational purposes. We may also disclose information when required by law, legal process, or a legitimate request from public authorities, or when needed to defend rights, property, or user safety.
3. Data Storage & Security
App records may be stored on secure servers operated by Jovena or by infrastructure providers acting on our instructions. Depending on how the service is configured, these systems may be located in your region or in other jurisdictions where our providers maintain facilities.
We apply administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to reduce the risk of unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or loss. These safeguards may include encrypted connections, access controls, role-based permissions, secure credential practices, logging, and periodic review of system security. Even so, no method of online storage or transmission can be guaranteed to be completely immune from risk.
Retention periods depend on why the information was gathered. Account records and content you submit may be kept while your account remains active and for a reasonable period afterward to handle legal obligations, dispute resolution, abuse prevention, backup recovery, or enforcement of platform rules. When information is no longer needed, it is deleted, anonymized, or securely archived according to operational and legal requirements.
4. Third-Party Services
Certain parts of Jovena rely on external service providers rather than tools built entirely in-house. These providers may assist with cloud hosting, database management, analytics, customer support workflows, authentication, media storage, email delivery, moderation support, or app stability monitoring.
Because those providers perform limited functions for the app, they may process technical identifiers, content metadata, or user-submitted material as needed to supply their services. They are not authorized to use that information for unrelated purposes under our instructions, though their own legal obligations and policies may also apply where relevant.
Links or integrations that direct you outside Jovena may lead to environments we do not control. Once you leave the app or interact with external services, their privacy terms and practices will govern that activity.
5. User Rights (GDPR & CCPA)
Depending on where you live, privacy law may give you specific rights regarding personal information. These can include the ability to request access to the data associated with your account, ask for corrections to inaccurate details, request deletion of eligible records, object to certain processing, limit how data is handled in some circumstances, or receive a portable copy where required by law.
Residents covered by the GDPR, CCPA, or similar laws may also have the right to learn what categories of information are processed, why they are processed, whether they are disclosed to service providers, and how to opt out of particular forms of sharing or marketing activity where applicable. Jovena does not discriminate against users for exercising lawful privacy rights.
To make a request, contact support@jovena.com. We may need to verify identity before completing a request, especially when account access, correction, export, or deletion is involved. If local law grants an appeal or complaint process, you may also contact your supervisory authority or consumer protection regulator.
6. Children's Privacy
Jovena is intended for adults and is not designed for children under 18. We do not knowingly solicit, accept, or maintain personal information from anyone under that age threshold. The service should not be used by minors, and parents or guardians who believe a child has provided personal information should reach out promptly so the matter can be reviewed.
If we learn that information from a person under 13 has been gathered in a manner covered by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we will take appropriate steps to delete it as required by applicable law. We may also suspend or remove related accounts where necessary.
7. Policy Updates
This privacy page may change from time to time as Jovena evolves, legal requirements shift, or operational practices are refined. Updated versions may appear at any time, and the date shown near the top will be revised when changes are posted.
When an update is significant, notice may be provided through the app, by email, on the website, or by another reasonable method. Continued use of Jovena after revised terms take effect means the latest version is the one that applies to your ongoing use of the service, subject to any rights you have under applicable law.
